Every year, it is estimated that UK citizens spend £700 million on unwanted gifts. As well as the waste involved in the items themselves, there’s the packaging, labour and production costs, and it comes at a huge environmental burden that our planet can’t really take any more. Whilst shopping small often helps this problem by avoiding mass-produced products, we still advise people not to buy something unless you feel sure that the recipient will appreciate and use it.

One barrier to more sustainable gifting is the idea that it’s somehow more thoughtful to pick an item out for someone. This is why I created a range of llustrated cards with some creative gift ideas, in the hope that it might help create a more thoughtful gifting experience even with things that are essentially the greatest gift of all: the gift of time. We hope that as well as making planet-friendly gift ideas more special, they might also release the burden of the ‘all at once’ nature of gift shopping.
