How do customers find a pen-pal?

Two ways!

1. Explain to your customers that they will need to write an ‘introductory letter’ and post it (using a normal stamp) to one of the other shops in their map.

They will need to make sure that your shop address is on the back of their envelope as a return address, along with their full name (or pseudonym if they prefer). E.g. if a customer was writing from our shop, they would need to write:

Alternatively, you may consider setting up a ‘local’ pen-pal basket to keep postage costs down for your customers. This can be particularly lovely for elderly customers who may feel isolated and lonely. If you want to do this, their introductory letter will go straight into your ‘introductory letter’ basket.

2. When your shop has been on the network for a while, you should begin to receive ‘introductory letters’ from other shops.

Once you have enough, we recommend that you place these letters in a basket in your shop next to your ’Sunday Letter Project’ poster. However, if you are low on space you may prefer to keep them behind the counter until people ask to see them.

Anyone seeking a pen-pal can come in and browse through these letters. They are welcome to prepare replies to as many people as they like, but we recommend that you do not allow people to take the original introductory letter away, so that people may find a few pen-pals. They can either take a photo of the letter or write a reply in your shop/cafe if you have space.

Customers can prepare a reply to their chosen pen-pal and post it themselves, remembering to include your address and their full name/pseudonym on the back of the envelope.

All of our products are printed, packaged, and finished with care in our Cheltenham studio. Each print or card from our online orders are made to order, so nothing is mass-produced and waste can be kept to a minimum.

Turnaround Time

We usually aim to fulfil orders within 3–4 working days. Sometimes it’s quicker, but during busy seasons or if your order is especially detailed or contains lots of different items, it may take us a little longer. We’ll always keep you updated if there are any delays.
